Ideal sequence of teeth cleaning

Flossing before brushing may reduce dental plaque and help maximize the benefits of cavity-fighting fluoride--The report is featured in the Journal of Periodontology, which is published by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP).

Floss Before You Brush for a Healthier Smile

A 2018 study published in the Journal of Periodontology suggests that flossing before brushing is the most effective way to remove dental plaque. Researchers found that this sequence significantly reduces plaque buildup and helps retain more fluoride from toothpaste, which strengthens teeth and prevents decay.

Flossing first helps loosen bacteria and debris from between the teeth, allowing brushing and rinsing to clear them away more effectively. Since plaque buildup can lead to periodontal disease—causing gum inflammation, recession, and even tooth loss—this simple change in routine may contribute to better oral health.

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) emphasizes that both flossing and brushing daily are essential for maintaining a healthy smile. Additionally, they recommend regular periodontal evaluations to prevent and treat gum disease.
