Post-Operative Instructions for Oral Surgery

Following these instructions is crucial to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery, as well as minimize the risk of complications after your oral surgery.  Please carefully follow these instructions after surgery.

Managing Bleeding

  • Avoid any sucking actions (such as using a straw) or spitting, as these can disturb the clot and cause further bleeding.
  • Mild bleeding is normal in the first few hours after surgery. Bite gently on the gauze pads provided to control the bleeding. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze every 30–45 minutes.
  • After the first few hours, bleeding should subside. If bleeding persists or becomes heavy, contact your doctor immediately.

Pain and Swelling Management

  • Mild to moderate discomfort is common after surgery. You will be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection and pain medication to help manage discomfort. Take the medication as directed, but avoid taking it on an empty stomach to minimize nausea.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) may also be used, unless otherwise directed. Always follow the recommended dosage.
  • Swelling is a normal part of the healing process. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face near the surgery site for the first 24–48 hours. Apply the ice for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, to reduce swelling. After the first 48 hours, switch to moist heat (a warm towel) to promote healing.
  • Bruising may occur and should resolve on its own within 1–2 weeks.

Diet and Hydration

  • Drink cool liquid for the first 24 hours following surgery. After 24 hours, start from soft and consistency food, and after 2-3 days slowly switch to soft food (e.g., yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup, scrambled eggs). Before your follow-up appointment, avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that can irritate the surgical site.
  • Hydration is key—drink plenty of water, but avoid using a straw to prevent dislodging the blood clot.
  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages or smoking during the healing process as they can interfere with healing.

Oral Hygiene

  • Avoid brushing or rinsing for the first 24 hours after the surgery
  • After 24 hours, resume brushing your teeth carefully, but avoid brushing directly on the surgical site before your follow-up appointment. You may also rinse gently with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of water) after meals to reduce the risk of infection.

Activity Restriction

  • Limit physical activity for the first few days. Avoid strenuous exercise or lifting heavy objects as this can increase swelling and bleeding.
  • Rest is important for proper healing. Take it easy during the first 48 hours, and gradually return to your normal routine as you feel better.
